Krk Cathedral

Krk Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a significant Romanesque structure in the city of Krk. Its first mention dates back to 1186, but it may have origins as early as the 5th century. The cathedral houses many treasures, including a grand marble altar, a Gothic statue of the Virgin and Child, and a silver altar piece depicting the Madonna. It is also the burial site of Bishop Antun Mahnić, a key figure in the Croatian Catholic movement, and hosts concerts during the summer months.

Krk Cathedral is not only the most visually striking structure in the city, alongside the Frankopan Castle, but it also forms part of a unique complex of sacred buildings, including the Cathedral of the Assumption, St. Quirinus Church, and St. Margaret’s Church. Recent excavations revealed Roman baths from the 1st century near the cathedral’s northern side. Some sources suggest that parts of the baths were repurposed into a church by the 3rd or 4th century, and a basilica was constructed by the late 5th century, forming the basis of the current cathedral.
